Nintendo Direct Reflection

When one is reminded that Nintendo is making Splatoon, one is compelled to consider where today's popular fantasy and science fiction ideas originate. Do books have any influence, or are they just like TV shows that have lower viewership than mid-tier Youtube channels?

Of course what we all really want is one of those Inspector Gadget books. How did a little girl and a dog get that anyway? Theft? Misappropriation of funds? Aliens? The Greatest American Hero aliens?

How to Revive Science Fiction

Friends but in space. I don't mean a show like Friends, I mean reuse the scripts with computer-generated members of the cast wearing shirts with moons and rockets on them.

On another note, how many Christmas spaceships have you seen? Looks like fantasy wins again, losers!

Christmas Dragons

Anybody else seeing more Christmas dragon decorations? I don't object, but neither do I understand. I suppose the typical dragon wants to receive presents, but so does everybody else. Especially characters from Bluey, apparently.

"It must have been a stylistic choice to make the sports scenes in these movies this slow-paced" - sports fans of the future
"In Rookie of the Year we see the beginning of athletics as we understand them." - movie critic of the future
"Why are Jedi Knights so bad at jumping?" - people of the future

Future Athletic Performance

In the future, physical excellence will have reached such a peak owing to improved conditioning and genetic engineering that people won't even imagine today's sports anime aren't documentaries.

You will of course be watching somebody else play Super Robot Wars. That's how things are done these days.

Ideas for a Super Robot Wars Launch Party

1. Play Super Robot Wars
2. Run a fun Super Robot Wars quiz show
3. Balloons
4. Serve treats based on Super Robot Wars items such as the ones you get each battle from ace bonuses
5. Come across an experimental mech and save the world (don't worry if it blows up a couple times; that's normal)
6. Watch party!

Visions of Future Anarchy

The first cruel robber asked travelers for the time. When they looked at their watches, he grabbed their feet and swung them against a tree. Knowing that, the hero approached him.
"Excuse me, sir. Do you know what time it is?"
"No, but you can look at my watch. I wear it around my ankle."
"Eh?"
Pow! The hero kicked the bandit against the tree and killed him.
The second cruel robber invited travelers to rest in a cottage. When polite visitors removed their shoes and stepped inside, the treacherous floor dropped them into a boiling cauldron. Knowing that, the hero approached him.
"Excuse me, sir. You look like someone who needs a break."
"Thank you. I'll just take off my boots."
"Eh?"
Entranced by the valuable watch, studded with gems but nevertheless tasteful, the robber failed to resist in time and was thrown into his own trap. Splash!
The third cruel robber gave travelers a remote control and suggested they watch their favorite program on his gigantic television set. Too bad for them, the remote was a bomb. Knowing that, the hero approached him.
"Excuse me, sir. Why not sit down on this couch and watch your favorite program?"
"It isn't on yet. Here, check this watch."
"And a fine watch that is. I bet it could bring . . . eh?"
Smash! The hero brought the TV down on the robber's head. With that, the road was safe at last.

The conventional method is to have uninvolved characters comment on how exciting the action is, but I'm not sure that does anything but pad. By "action sequence" we here mean "card duel" of course. Have you ever gone back and watched Yu-Gi-Oh? It's amazingly fast-paced till the ratings came in, and then began the age of milking.

Turning Your Series Around

Instead of calling your show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, call it Rings of Wisdom and Rings of Courage, and also put out a breakfast cereal based on it. People don't have to watch your show, but they do have to eat.

Acceptable Changes in Adaptations for Visual Media

Masks don't sound all that cool when they're described, but they look cool. Therefore everyone in the TV show or movie should be masked, regardless of the source material. The Greeks and Romans did it. Just look up what persona actually means.

You could really play up the framing device, just bore everybody for no reason. Cast your one big name as the guy who looks at Mercury and give him at least 10 minutes each episode. Better yet, start the actual story in the last episode of the first season as a cliffhanger, then act surprised when there's no season two.

Streaming Pitch

If nobody's going to watch anyway, you might as well adapt The Worm Ouroboros. And don't try to pretend people are going to watch your streaming show. We all know.

Survivor Bias in Adaptations

Look around at poor adaptations, regardless of which medium to which other medium, and you'll see they have one factor in common: They're all based on stuff that came out. That's what holds adaptations back. Adapt something that got cancelled if you want to produce something with real imagination.

Review of Fantasy Island

Hey, wait a minute! They were using "fantasy" in a different sense from what we use here! Aside from that, I never thought much of it.
