The far-ranging travels of Gaunatico and Duir did not except the town of Euspath.
"Euspath is a name familiar to me for an unclear reason. Clarify it," Gaunatico instructed his manservant.
"Euspath's notoriety, sir, is for its virtue, specifically the probity of its citizens."
Nor did their stay put the lie to that reputation. The locals mentioned nothing about bribes, charged prices unable to be construed as exorbitant, and caught up to them bearing the items they pretended to lose with the thought of engineering an excuse. Aside from that, the town had as much of interest as any other. Upon their retirement for the evening Gaunatico proposed to move on the next day, a plan to which Duir had no mind to object. Both slept easily and thoroughly.
They awoke chained to the ground before a pit which blessed them by concealing its depth and contents. The floor was hard, the air close, and worst of all, the place was unfurnished. Behind them, a man spoke.
"Welcome, visitors. I will initiate you into our local custom. First I will employ this dagger which I hold above you, examine it if you like, to cut out your sins. Second I will cast your sins into that pit before you, likely you have surveyed it already, as meals for my creation. Third, you will have left town by then, my creation will emerge and wreak such massacres as will excite the literary imagination for generations. Now then."
The sorcerer yanked back Duir's head and sliced down his chest from which he pulled a dark mass. He did the same to Gaunatico. Both marveled, for neither bled or was harmed at all. The two masses flew above them into the pit, whence soon they heard the terrible sound of a beast's feeding. An awful roar followed that, then silence.
The man walked to the edge and looked down. "It's dead. I didn't expect that. What do you get up to out there? Please don't tell me, since I am no hardier than my poor abomination. I will release you now."
"Don't hurry if it puts you out," Gaunatico told him. "I feel refreshed as I haven't in years. I might stay for a month."
"Please don't," the sorcerer begged.

Intervention of the Dungeon Sage
Calamity! There was no other word for it outside of synonyms. Dozens of miners were trapped below, and worse than that, the mine might not resume operations for years. Owners and managers could do nothing but stand apart and compete in frowning.
"Pardon me." Normally people gawked without introducing themselves, but one look at this man precluded any idea he could be normal. "I came to investigate the new dungeon. Is that it over there?"
"Dungeon Sage Hesperno!"
"I suppose a mine could be used as a dungeon . . ."
"Please use your magic to make a stable new opening! And save the miners if it's convenient. Don't forget the opening, please!"
"If they're on the way. So that is the new dungeon?" Receiving confirmation, the sage advanced and, using proprietary techniques, descended. Within the day awed miners began emerging. Not more than a week later, Hesperno came out, wiped his hands, and sought the nearest owner.
"I've cleared everything out. Thank you for the nice dungeon. I liked the sorcerer-slug that was sinking curses into all the ore. It was different."
"The what?"
"It was a little exotic but not self-indulgent. Goodbye. I'll come back after you've expanded it some."
And so it transpired.

This Story Is Actually About Accidentally Closing Programs on Public Computers
On the plain of Harik-Tal-Kub, around the triple altars, ninety mages of perfected skill caused to be what never otherwise would, and upon each altar, one supreme among his brethren performed miracles. A master of magic mightier still climbed the tower built in the center by hurried hands aided by profound arts and standing on it said, "You sorcerers thirty, you enchanters, you warlocks, make them rise! The Sorcery Moon, the Enchanter's Moon, the Warlockry Moon never share the night sky but once every seven thousand years by nature, but make them tonight! Then we perform the triple magic."
Called by their arts, the three moons appeared on the horizon. From there they moved, drawn upward unwillingly to their places above the altars. The ceremony was near its culmination, the triple magic within reach.
The moons continued to the point of conjunction, bonked into one another, and shattered into a thousand times a thousand chunks, times three. The chanting and the hissing of half-living instruments ceased as the mages watched the strange rain in heaven in increasing anxiety.
"You sorcerers, you enchanters, you warlocks!" the great master at last pronounced. "If anyone asks, we were having a trade convention! Nothing strange about it! Thuoskilnak there won 'Mage of the Year!' Now let's cheese it!" The ninety and the three and the one scattered and hoped nobody would notice. Finis

The Fairy Cottage
Once there was a lovely little cottage in which nobody lived. A prince took up there for a short time, but he left after finding the secret of the wardrobe. A second prince came later, but he left after he discovered the secret of the attic. A third prince moved after unearthing the secret of the cellar.
"I think we have to give up on this idea of dumping the place on a prince, sir. They have money and not much sense, true, but they aren't stable renters."
"Nonsense," declared Realty Sorcerer Garvaskem. "The secrets you planted there simply were insufficiently fell, my apprentice. Try again."
The cottage is still available.
