Beware of This Ambiguity

When you give a character nova magic it may be obvious to you whether you mean that it's new or that it draws power from exploding stars, but your audience won't know. Therefore be sure to give a long explanation every time it comes up. Your readers and your word count will appreciate it.

Everybody loved your characters, but their story is over. How do you follow it up? With new characters who have the exact same personalities, of course, but here's how you fool everyone: Change the first letter of their names. Anyone sophisticated enough to catch your little wordplay will be the sort to appreciate it.

Suppose you have your main character travel around with his butler, but the readers at home tell you the setup is too stuffy. What do you do? Add a team of cheerleaders, of course. Keep the butler. Audiences today demand more.

Who's the Narrator?

Ask yourself that when you write your story. Even if it's an omniscient viewpoint who isn't a character, is that viewpoint speaking to contemporaries of the story, generations to come, modern audiences, or what? Comparing something to a helicopter, for example, is definitely out of place for Drizzt to say, but not necessarily for the narrator. What kind of references would the narrator use, or what actions would he applaud or condemn?
